An elected Dutton Coalition Government will fund the commissioning of a memorial sculpture that recognises the service and sacrifice of Australians of Chinese descent in the service of our nation.
The Leader of the Opposition, the Hon Peter Dutton MP, made the commitment at the Box Hill Lunar New Year celebrations and said the memorial will be hosted by the Box Hill RSL – and located in the Box Hill Gardens.
“The story of Australia would not be the same without our Chinese diaspora. That contribution covers every field and endeavour. For more than a century, Chinese Australians have served with distinction in our nation’s defence,” Mr Dutton said.
“Their courage, sacrifice and loyalty to Australia is woven into our history and I am delighted to make this commitment today in honour of their service,” Mr Dutton said.
Shadow Home Affairs Minister, Senator James Paterson said, “Chinese Australians have served honourably and with great distinction in war throughout our history, and many continue to do so today. It is only right that we honour their service and sacrifice for our country in the home of Melbourne’s diverse and vibrant Chinese community.”
Federal Member for Menzies, Mr Keith Wolahan MP said, “As a veteran, I know that service has no heritage qualifier – only duty, courage, and sacrifice. For over a century, Chinese Australians have embodied these values, serving in every capacity and conflict. This community has helped write our nation’s most sacred story. It is right and proper that we acknowledge that.”
Strengthening our local communities and honouring our veterans is incredibly important for our society.
This memorial sculpture will be designed in consultation with the local community, with Chinese Australian veterans, and with current serving Chinese Australian ADF members.
