Upgrade for black spots
$2.18M PROJECT THE LATEST EFFORT TO MINIMISE CRASHES
YET another project to reduce the accident rate on Mt Nebo and Mt Glorious roads is under way.Work has started on upgrading Mt Nebo Rd in an effort to improve road safety for one of the northwest’s most notorious black spots.
The $2.18 million project will include work at five locations as part of the Federal Government’s Black Spot Program. Brisbane City Council Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said it would include pavement widening at sharp bends, improved signage, some vegetation removal to increase visibility, better line markings and installing new and upgraded guardrails.
Federal LNP MP for Dickson Peter Dutton said the work was important as the area was frequented by drivers who were not likely to be familiar with the roads.
“The 7.25km section being upgraded has seen 41 crashes recorded between 2007 and 2011, with many resulting in the need for medical treatment or hospitalisation of the motorists involved,” Mr Dutton said.
The work is expected to be completed early next year. The news of the upgrade comes just weeks after a group of motorcyclists announced a plan to start patrols of the dangerous roads to offer first aid to crash victims.
