The Health Minister, Nicola Roxon, has performed another spectacular back-flip – this time on the issue of midwives providing home-birthing services.
It is a humiliating and major embarrassment for the Rudd Government.
On the limited information available, it appears the Minister has adopted the position advocated by the Coalition to maintain the status quo and allow midwives to continue to assist in home-births.
This will now allow for debate and considered examination of the issue over the next two years.
"It was ridiculous for the Minister to try and make home-births illegal and effectively force the option underground,” the Shadow Minister for Health and Ageing, Peter Dutton said.
"Minister Roxon's attack on a mother’s choice was breathtaking and many mothers have expressed a mix of disappointment and disgust with the Minister throughout this affair.
"Nicola Roxon is all over the place on health and this back-flip is just the latest act of incompetence.
“Kevin Rudd promised to fix health - he must be disappointed that his Minister’s management of health is only making things worse,” Mr Dutton said.
The Coalition has called for the Minister to release all costings and the actuarial modelling for the provision of indemnity insurance for midwives.
