  • Multi-Million Dollar Mobile Technology Boost in Drug War
Sophisticated and world-class technologies have been installed in eight new Mobile Examination Vehicles (MEVs) that have entered the service of Australia Border Force (ABF) in the national fight against drugs and other illegal activities.

The Minister for Immigration and Border Protection Peter Dutton said the new vehicles, deployed in pairs to Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth, are heavily laden with a variety of technologies and capabilities and are the first of their kind not only for ABF but for most law enforcement authorities across the country.

“In 2013, this Government announced a $15.7 million investment in technology to enhance the ABF’s capabilities to examine and inspect goods. Part of that investment was $3.9 million for the eight MEVs. I am pleased to now announce the successful rollout of the fleet,” Mr Dutton said.

“These vehicles provide the capability to deploy substance detection technologies, expert examination tools, safe confiscated weapons storage and safety equipment.

“What this means in simple terms is that many of the capabilities and technologies that were previously grounded can now be driven to specific locations and, for example, suspicious substances can be immediately examined.

“This Government’s war on drugs, especially ice, is well known. Each and every day, the officers of the ABF are on duty at our nation’s border stopping not only the drug ice, but the entire architecture of addiction; including precursor chemicals, drug equipment such as ice pipes and pill presses, and the illicit cash which funds these criminal networks.

“The ABF doesn’t just work at the border however; important investigations and prevention work is undertaken before and after the border, in close cooperation with domestic and international law enforcement partners.

“These new vehicles will greatly assist in this battle.”
