JOINT PRESS RELEASE
THE HON PETER DUTTON MP, SHADOW MINISTER FOR HEALTH
DAN TEHAN MP, FEDERAL MEMBER FOR WANNON
The Coalition will contribute $10 million towards an Integrated Cancer Care Centre for western Victoria.
Shadow Minister for Health, the Hon Peter Dutton MP was in Warrnambool today to announce the Coalition’s commitment to provide $10 million in federal funding towards the ‘Peter’s Project’ campaign to build an integrated cancer care centre, delivering vital health services to western Victoria.
Mr Dutton was joined by long-time campaigners for Peter’s Project, including Founder Vicki Jellie, Premier the Hon Dr Denis Napthine MP, Federal Member for Wannon Dan Tehan.
“Tony Abbott and I have been working with Dan Tehan and the Peter’s Project Committee for several years now, and I am pleased to announce that if elected, the Coalition will deliver funding for vital cancer care services for the community,” Mr Dutton said.
“I have been fighting tooth and nail to deliver this vital funding to our community since Vicki Jellie raised the proposal for a Peter’s Project Cancer Centre over three years ago. I am proud that a Coalition government will deliver vital cancer care services for our families here in Wannon – because we all deserve access to specialist healthcare regardless of where we live,” Mr Tehan said.
Victorian Premier and Member for South West Coast Denis Napthine said he was pleased the Federal Coalition had committed to ensuring that residents in the south west would have access to the very best in integrated cancer care facilities.
“The Peter’s Project committee and the wider community have been working hard to gain these vital services for our region. The Victorian Coalition Government has already committed $15 million to deliver radiotherapy services to south west Victoria but this additional $10 million will see our community benefit from a fully integrated, state-of-the-art, comprehensive cancer treatment facility," Dr Napthine said.
“We’re thrilled that Dan Tehan has worked so very hard for our community to secure this funding for Peter’s Project. We are very grateful to him for his commitment to his electorate, and for delivering this vital funding for our community. We also very much appreciate Peter Dutton’s involvement and hard work on this over several years. The community’s hard work has paid off and we have been heard by the Coalition, and we look forward to September 7 for an election result that secures this funding,” said Peter’s Project Founder Vicki Jellie.
Peter's Project is a community-driven campaign to bring improved cancer care services to western Victoria, which was founded by Vicki Jellie following the death of her husband Peter Jellie. Peter’s Project has recently launched their Peter’s Project: Target $5 million appeal campaign and is calling on the community for support.
