Australian families are most affected by the Gillard Government’s refusal to act on the availability of synthetic drugs.
The Gillard Government is still ‘resisting calls for federal intervention’ according to media reports today, despite the dire health consequences of the products and their easy availability.
Shadow Health Minister, Peter Dutton, said the Gillard Government must respond urgently to the growing crises of synthetic drug use.
“This is a serious public health issue that is having awful consequences, particularly for our youth, and it demands an urgent national response,” Mr Dutton said.
“Rather than providing dismissive comments, Minister Plibersek and her colleagues should have immediately canvassed all options available to ban and control these substances, including through the Standard for the Uniform Scheduling of Medicines and Poisons, Competition and Consumer Act 2010, Customs Act 1901 and Criminal Code (Cth).
“Getting these incredibly dangerous products off the streets should have been an absolute priority for the Health Minister.
“The Government must not let its ongoing leadership problems distract it from serious public health issues and the business of governing,” Mr Dutton said.
