Shadow Health Minister Peter Dutton today welcomed the release of the McKeon Review of
health and medical research and called on the Gillard Government to restore
funding certainty to the sector.

“Simon McKeon AO and the respective panel members are to be congratulated on their
significant efforts in formulating a strategy with 21 recommendations, having
considered over 300 submissions.

“Health and medical research is a vital sector for improving health outcomes, it
provides highly-skilled employment and makes an important contribution to our
economy.

“Unfortunately, the sector has suffered in recent years from the Gillard Government’s chaotic
approach to funding,” Mr Dutton said.

Labor planned to cut $400 million from medical research in the 2011 Budget, but
eventually backflipped in a process similar to the current debate about attacks
on superannuation.

Researchers and stakeholders in the sector are again worried the Gillard Government will
slash funding as its fiscal situation worsens.  The Government has again
failed to rule out future cuts.

“Labor’s lack of funding certainty undermines confidence, jeopardises research projects
and will drive our best and brightest minds overseas.

“The Coalition has guaranteed certainty of funding to medical research and I call on
Minister Plibersek today to match our commitment.

“The Coalition provided a five-fold increase in funding for health and medical
research in Government.  I look forward to considering the findings of the
review to inform future policy,” Mr Dutton said.
