25 September 2012 Minister Penny Wong is engaged in a grab for pennies, in a desperate bid to realise the Government’s fiscal fantasy of achieving a surplus. Today she resorted to lies and spin to cover political motives.
Ms Wong was pressed today to explain how she could achieve significant savings through a narrow focus on budget expenditures, such as travel and publications. Ms Wong described health cuts as structural savings, boasting about cutting private health insurance rebates and the dental care of concession card holders on the Chronic Disease Dental Scheme (CDDS).
Ms Wong trotted out the discredited Labor talking points describing the CDDS as, “Millionaires dental services”. The CDDS is being closed to attack Tony Abbott’s legacy as Health Minister and to create a pause in dental funding, as existing Government programs are sucked into Labor’s black hole from unfunded grand promises.
Shadow Minister for Health and Ageing, Peter Dutton, exposed the truth in parliament last week, as he fights the closure of CDDS by the Government.
“80% of the chronically ill people abandoned by the Government are concession card holders. The Minister needs to be honest about why these people will be dumped on huge public dental lists, with a 19 month plus wait for the Government’s new scheme,” Mr Dutton said.
Mr Dutton renewed his call to Tony Windsor and Rob Oakeshott to prevent the 19 month gap created by the Government by their closing of the CDDS.
“Bob Katter is backing the Coalition to protect cancer sufferers, heart patients and many other chronically ill people. As Mr Windsor and Mr Oakeshott consider their positions, I urge them to consult widely with their electorates,” Mr Dutton said.
