Friday 10 August 2012 - Peter Dutton, the Shadow Minister for Health and Ageing, has called on Minister Tanya Plibersek to pay her carbon tax bill on health, which she created with the Prime Minister.
“The very least Minister Plibersek should do is pay her carbon tax bill, but the only real cure is to repeal this broken promise tax,” Mr Dutton said.
Victoria’s Health Minister, David Davis, has requested Ms Plibersek pay his state’s $13 million carbon tax health bill. Queensland Minister, Lawrence Springborg and New South Wales Minister, Jillian Skinner, expect their carbon tax bills to be in the order of $30 million and $50 million respectively.
Mr Dutton also highlighted the design of the tax as a reflection of the Government’s dysfunction.
“The carbon tax is doing exactly what the Gillard Government designed it to do, raising the price of electricity, gas, aviation fuel, refrigeration and more health system inputs. It’s a sick tax, by a sick Government,” Mr Dutton said.
The States are locked into funding agreements with the Commonwealth, allowing Minister Plibersek to deprive the nation’s health system of compensation in the immediate future. Mr Dutton is also concerned at the impact on the private system.
“The Minister signed up the States to funding agreements, then slapped the carbon tax on top. This tax is also cascading through the private system, so even future funding growth can’t fix it. Repealing the tax is the only way to prevent harm to the entire health system,” Mr Dutton said.
